Many pet owners try to tackle urine odours with supermarket sprays, baking soda, or steam cleaning — and are frustrated when the smell returns within days. Here's why those methods fail:
Store-bought odour sprays contain perfumes and masking agents that temporarily cover the smell. They do not break down the urine crystals, so the odour returns — often stronger — as the perfume fades.

Fresh pet urine has a relatively mild odour. The problem begins as the urine dries. The liquid evaporates, but the urine salts and crystals remain in the carpet fibres, backing, underlay and subfloor. As these crystals become more concentrated, they produce an increasingly pungent ammonia-like smell.
The odour is further intensified by bacteria that thrive in the warm, moist, alkaline environment created by dried urine. These bacteria break down the urine further, producing additional odour compounds — including mercaptans, the same compounds found in skunk spray.
Humidity makes the problem worse. On humid days, the urine crystals absorb moisture from the air and temporarily release their odour more strongly — which is why pet odour in carpets often seems worse in summer or after rain.
Pets have a sense of smell that is many times more powerful than ours. Even after you have cleaned a urine spot and can no longer smell it yourself, your pet can still detect the residual scent — and this signals to them that this is an acceptable toilet area. We recommend keeping pets and children off the treated area while it is drying — typically 2–4 hours — and then the area is completely safe for normal use.
In many cases, yes. P.U.R.T.® has shown excellent results on even severe, long-standing urine contamination. However, the outcome depends on the extent of the damage, the type of carpet, and whether the urine has penetrated through to the subfloor. In cases of extreme contamination, underlay replacement may also be recommended.
