Everything you need to know about Chem-Dry Action's cleaning process, products, pricing and results — answered honestly.
Chem-Dry Action uses a patented Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process — a fundamentally different approach to all other carpet cleaning methods. Instead of flooding your carpet with water, our system uses millions of tiny carbonating bubbles that penetrate deep into the carpet fibres, lifting dirt, bacteria and allergens to the surface where they are extracted away.
This means your carpets dry in 1–2 hours rather than the 1–2 days typical of steam cleaning, and there is no risk of mould, mildew or bacteria growing in wet backing and underlay. We are also a one-stop cleaning service, offering 12+ specialist services including carpet, upholstery, rug, mattress, tile, leather, mould removal, water damage and pet odour treatments.
Yes. All Chem-Dry Action technicians are fully trained and certified in carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, water damage restoration and occupational health and safety practices. We carry full public liability insurance, so you can feel completely secure when we work in your home or business.
Absolutely. We stand behind every clean we perform. If you are not completely satisfied with the results, we will return to your property free of charge and remedy the situation. Your satisfaction is our highest priority — we have built our reputation on it over more than 30 years of service in Sydney.
Steam cleaning (also called hot water extraction) uses a high-pressure machine that blasts large volumes of water deep into your carpet and underlay. This can cause over-wetting, which leads to longer drying times (sometimes 1–2 days), shrinkage, stretching, and — most seriously — the growth of mould and bacteria in the wet backing and underlay. This is a genuine health hazard.
Chem-Dry's Hot Carbonating Extraction uses approximately 80% less water than steam cleaning. The carbonating action lifts dirt to the surface without saturating the carpet, so your carpets dry in 1–2 hours and there is no risk of mould or bacterial growth. There are also no soapy residues left behind, so your carpets stay cleaner for longer.
The time required depends on the ease of access, the size of the rooms, and the amount of dirt and staining. As a general guide:
Your technician will give you a more accurate time estimate when they assess your property on the day.
You can walk on your carpets immediately after cleaning — Chem-Dry's low-moisture process means there is no need to stay off the carpet for hours. Your carpets will typically be fully dry within 1–2 hours of the technician leaving. We recommend wearing clean indoor shoes or socks rather than going barefoot or walking in from outside until the carpet is fully dry.
We recommend professional carpet cleaning every 6–12 months for most households. Research has shown that carpets that are regularly cleaned and protected have a significantly longer lifespan than those that are not. For households with pets, young children or allergy sufferers, more frequent cleaning (every 3–6 months) is advisable.
It is also worth noting that carpet actually acts as a filter — trapping dust, allergens and bacteria in its fibres rather than allowing them to circulate in the air. This makes regular cleaning especially important for maintaining a healthy indoor environment.
No. Chem-Dry does not use harsh alkaline pre-sprays that can strip away the protective coating on stain-resistant carpets. However, certain intensive stain-removal treatments may require the carpet to be re-protected afterwards. We will always advise you if this is the case and can apply fresh Chem-Dry Protectant as part of the service.
Chem-Dry Protectant creates an invisible barrier around each carpet fibre, giving you a window of opportunity to blot up spills before they become permanent stains. Key benefits include:
We recommend re-applying carpet protection every 18–24 months for maximum benefit.
These dark lines are called filtration soiling. They occur when air passes through the gap between the carpet and the skirting board or under a closed door, depositing microscopic soil particles along the carpet edge over time. Because the particles are so fine, they penetrate deep into the carpet pile and can be very difficult to remove.
Our technicians carry specialist products to treat filtration soiling, and in many cases can achieve good results. To help prevent it, vacuum the edges of your carpet regularly. We recommend being careful near the tack-strip at the carpet edge, as it can be sharp.
Our technicians will move most standard furniture to ensure a thorough clean. However, to get the most out of your appointment, we recommend de-cluttering rooms as much as possible beforehand — removing small items, toys, ornaments and lightweight furniture. This allows the technician to spend the maximum amount of time on the actual cleaning process rather than moving items.
Very heavy items such as large wardrobes, pianos and entertainment units are generally not moved for safety reasons.
We recommend waiting approximately 6 hours before using upholstered furniture after cleaning. If we have applied fabric protection, this extends to 12 hours to allow the solution to fully settle into the fabric fibres and provide maximum protection. Your technician will advise you on the specific drying time for your furniture type.
Yes. We offer a free pick-up and return service for area rugs and oriental rugs across Sydney. Our technicians will collect your rug, clean it thoroughly at our facility using the appropriate method for the rug type and fabric, and return it to you clean, fresh and protected. This is particularly important for delicate or valuable rugs that require specialist handling.
Chem-Dry Action can clean a wide range of upholstery fabrics including cotton, polyester, microfibre, velvet, chenille, linen and most blended fabrics. We also offer specialist leather cleaning and conditioning as a separate service. Before commencing any upholstery clean, our technician will test a small, inconspicuous area to ensure the cleaning solution is appropriate for your specific fabric type.
The success of stain removal depends largely on how long the stain has been present, what caused it, and whether any previous cleaning attempts have been made. Fresh stains are almost always easier to remove than old, set-in stains.
Our technicians carry a comprehensive range of specialist stain-removal products in every van, capable of treating many of the most difficult stains including red wine, coffee, ink, rust, blood and more. We are regularly engaged by real estate agents to remove stains between tenancies rather than replacing carpet — which speaks to the effectiveness of our treatments.
We will always give you an honest assessment of what is achievable before commencing work.
Yes. Pet urine odour is one of the most common and challenging problems we treat. When urine dries, it leaves behind uric acid crystals that bond deep into carpet fibres and underlay. Standard cleaning products only mask the smell temporarily — the crystals remain and the odour returns, especially in humid conditions.
Chem-Dry Action uses a specialist Pet Urine Removal Treatment (P.U.R.T.®) that chemically breaks down the uric acid crystals at the molecular level, permanently eliminating the odour at its source rather than simply covering it up. This is the only truly effective solution for serious pet odour problems.
Yes. A musty smell after steam cleaning is a classic sign of mould or mildew growing in the wet carpet backing or underlay — a direct result of over-wetting. This is one of the most common problems we are called in to fix after a steam clean.
Our Hot Carbonating Extraction process uses 80% less water than steam cleaning, which means the carpet dries quickly and mould cannot take hold. We also carry specialist anti-microbial treatments that can address existing mould growth in carpet and underlay.
Yes, absolutely. Chem-Dry's primary cleaning solution — The Natural® — is water-based, completely non-toxic, and contains no harsh chemicals, soapy detergents or bleaching agents. It is safe for children, babies and pets. Our cleaning chemicals are produced and tested to the highest standards in the USA and are fully compliant with Australian OHS regulations.
Because we use no toxic chemicals and leave no soapy residues, your home is genuinely safer after a Chem-Dry clean than after many conventional cleaning methods.
Yes. The Natural® has no added fragrance or scent, making it ideal for people who are sensitive to smells or chemical odours. We include deodorising as standard practice, but if you are sensitive to fragrances, simply let our technician know when booking and we will omit this step.
For asthma and allergy sufferers, Chem-Dry cleaning is particularly beneficial — independent testing has shown that our process removes up to 98% of allergens from carpets and upholstery, including dust mite matter, pet dander and pollen.
Carpets act as a natural filter, trapping dust mites, pet dander, pollen and other allergens in their fibres rather than allowing them to circulate in the air. However, this filter needs to be regularly emptied — which is exactly what professional cleaning does.
Chem-Dry's Hot Carbonating Extraction has been independently tested and proven to remove up to 98% of allergens and 89% of airborne bacteria from carpets and upholstery. We also offer specialist dust mite treatment as an add-on service for allergy sufferers.
